Our philosophy

Modern. Sustainable. Safe. Modular.

Whether you're looking to buy a first home, rental accommodation, or you’re scaling back down, Genuine Tiny Homes are built with adaptability in mind. Easily transportable, our tiny homes are designed to be eco friendly and consentable.

These are the four principles that define what we do at Genuine Tiny Homes.

Modern, Sustainable, Safe, Modular homes built to fit your needs.

Modern – Modern design is an all encompassing philosophy which we define in three main categories.
  • Authenticity of materials - At Genuine Tiny Homes we let materials be what they are, not try to look like something else. We are proud of the fact we have repurposed and redesigned the ubiquitous shipping container to be part of the structure as well as the exterior cladding material. With a Genuine Tiny Homes what you see is what you get.

  • The Alfresco Connection - A Genuine Tiny Homes has a lot of glass. This introduces the alfresco experience to everyday living and is a defining feature of our design and it means that from your main living space you will feel connected to the outdoors. Whether a vibrant urban setting or a peaceful retreat, part of living in a Genuine Tiny Homes is feeling connected to the place which you choose to live. The defining experience of living in a Genuine Tiny Homes is feeling connected to the outdoors from your living space.

  • Minimalism - To us minimalism doesn’t mean living in an empty house with one chair, but it does mean living in an efficiently designed home without wasted space. A Genuine Tiny Homes has rooms which are strategically sized, meant to create intimacy and warmth without feeling cramped, but not creating needless square footage. A Genuine Tiny Homes is designed for you to live comfortably and efficiently wherever you choose to place it.

Sustainable – Designed and manufactured specifically to deal with New Zealand’s harsh and varied climate.
  • Energy Efficiency - At Genuine Tiny Homes we see a sustainable energy future which relies on renewable and clean electricity production to power our lives and our homes. Every Genuine Tiny Homes is equipped with proven all electric systems which allows for renewable energy sources to offset some or all, of the energy usage of a Genuine Tiny Homes.

  • Like it or not shipping containers are here to stay, rather see them ending on some rubbish heap or rotting away on some land fill, we breath new life into them and give them a higher purpose than they were ever conceived to deliver. We never use brand new shipping containers, we use what we call, “One Trip”. That way we know we are doing our best for the environment and our homeowners. Today, there are roughly 36 million shipping containers in the world, and on any given day, there are between five and six million shipping containers on the high seas, transporting everything from chips to dishwashers. Extrapolate, and that adds up to approximately 120 million containers packed with cargo traversing the oceans every year, with an estimated value of more than $4 trillion (based on 2013 figures). As no reliable figures exist we estimate there are between 6 to 10 million containers manufactured each year, adding to the 40 million or so in service and the approximately 100 million already in existence.

The tragedy is the cost of shipping empty containers back to their origin are high, so often times the containers sit unused in ports. Today, it is cheaper to have your goods shipped in a brand new containers from China, to destinations all over the world. In fact, the energy that it would require to melt down these derelict containers would be about 8000 kWh of energy, while refurbishing one into a building uses just about 400 kWh. This is the reason that container architecture has become all the rage in recent years and we have modeled our business around this resource.

Safe and Durable - Genuine Tiny Homes is built to stand the test of time.
  • Durability - Whether it is the corten steel shipping container base, the steel framing or our cladding, every Genuine Tiny Homes is built to stand the test of time. Steel construction and durable cladding means a Genuine Tiny Homes will require less long term maintenance and out live a standard home. The durable nature of a Genuine Tiny Homes means less waste from renovation and eventual demolition of homes.

  • Wind resistant, Container homes are solid blocks of steel and extremely robust. When arranged in either single units or multiple units connected, they can withstand 160 klm winds on a foundation, or 280 klm winds when easily anchored with pylons. This means they are extremely solid in cyclones or Hurricanes.

  • Life is precious and here is New Zealand we have to take mother nature seriously. Living in a Genuine Tiny Home, means Earthquake resistance. As a solid unit the vibration or shaking will not make the container break. The contents may be disturbed but the building will not fall down or crumble like a traditional building. Even in a direct hit, the structure may possibly roll around a little but certainly not collapse. It is the most perfect safety cocoon in an Earthquake. It is at least 100 times safer and stronger than a conventional housing structure. …in any earthquake, we would much rather be inside a Genuine Tiny Home than a normal home or office.

  • Containers are also “virtually indestructible”. Shipping containers are designed to bear heavy loads, withstand harsh climatic conditions, as well as rough seas and can also easily be stacked one on top of the other to create multi-story homes. Their structural stability makes such homes earthquake and hurricane proof, which makes them extremely safe for natural disaster-prone areas like New Zealand.

  • Ease/speed of Construction: Building a housing structure out of a shipping container takes roughly 4 weeks in comparison to brick and mortar structure which takes 1 year or more to construct.

  • Safety: A major problem with remote and rural infrastructure and also city dwellings is the risk of break-ins. Containers need a blowtorch to break into, and are too heavy to lift up and make-off with without anyone noticing. This contributes to making it a safe structure for use in all areas.

Modular - Built faster, higher quality, and with less waste than any standard home.
  • Faster - Without the delays related to weather and other unpredictable events, the speed of construction in a factory is faster and more efficient than you will find in construction outdoors.

  • Quality - Rigorous quality control in a controlled environment allows for a high quality construction process. Quality control checks are performed at every step of the way to maintain a predictable construction process.

  • Less Waste - Indoor construction and technologically advanced construction techniques make for a maximally efficient construction process with minimal waste.

Advantages

Advantages of a Genuine Tiny Home

People who have lived in tiny houses speak glowingly about the many benefits. They say living tiny has made their lives better in numerous ways, such as:

Lower Expenses
A tiny house costs a lot less to build than a full-sized one. Cutting back on housing expenses enables tiny house owners to put more money toward luxuries (such as travel), save for retirement by using what you might have been spending on a house payment to put into superannuation, or simply work less.

Cheaper Mortgage
Most people can’t afford to buy a house without taking out a mortgage, which only adds to the long-term cost. A 30-year mortgage even at today’s historically low interest rates the actual cost over the period of you loan could be more than double the purchase price. Current reports indicate that 68% of tiny house owners own their homes free and clear, as compared to just 29% of all homeowners.

Lower Energy Use
Tiny houses don’t just cost less upfront – they’re also much cheaper to maintain. Bills for electricity, fuel, water, and waste disposal are all much lower. In addition, it’s much easier to live off the grid in a tiny house, since you can heat the entire space with a small wood stove and power it with a small solar array. Many tiny houses even have composting toilets, which break down waste without needing to be hooked up to a sewage system.

Freedom of Movement
A tiny house has a small footprint, so it doesn’t require a large plot of land. And with a Genuine Tiny Home, if you want to move, you can take your home with you.

Easy Maintenance
A tiny house is easy to take care of. With less space to clean and fewer appliances to repair, tiny house owners can spend less time on chores and more on their work, hobbies, and relationships.

Harmony with Nature
The tiny house movement goes hand in hand with the environmental movement. Tiny houses require less material to build and less energy to power. Also, their small size makes them easier to site in a place that’s close to nature.

A Simpler Life
A tiny house doesn’t have room for any kind of excess stuff: bulging wardrobes, elaborate electronics, and huge libraries of books and videos. Tiny homeowners pare their belongings down to the essentials, keeping only the items that truly enrich their lives.

Your Genuine Tiny Home can be Homestar rated.

Homestar is designed to be an independent rating tool for assessing the health, efficiency, and sustainability of homes across Aotearoa.
